North London Garages and the RAC proudly announces the graduation of its first cohort of Roadside Technician Apprentices, marking a significant milestone in the organisation's commitment to fostering excellence in the automotive industry.

Initiated in November 2021, the comprehensive 30-month training program, tailored to address the growing demand for skilled roadside motor vehicle repair professionals, has culminated in the successful qualification of eight individuals. Among them, one remarkable female apprentice, Keisha, exemplifies the diversity and inclusivity championed by the RAC.

The graduates, all hailing from the London area, have completed the rigorous Light Vehicle Level 2 Autocare Standard curriculum. Their achievements will be celebrated at a prestigious ceremony to be held at the RAC's headquarters in Birmingham on 1st May.

This new apprenticeship program uniquely integrates Level 1 Electric Vehicle training, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the expertise to address the evolving needs of modern vehicle technology. Covering fundamental mechanical and electrical systems, including engine mechanics, electrical diagnostics, and brake systems, the curriculum empowers apprentices to swiftly diagnose and resolve common roadside breakdowns.

Colin Denton, Chief Executive of North London Garages, commends the RAC's visionary approach in developing a bespoke apprenticeship initiative, underscoring its rarity and significance within the motor vehicle industry. "I am immensely proud to have been part of this bespoke initiative. The collaboration between RAC and North London Garages has set a new standard for apprenticeship programs in our industry."

The selection process for apprentices emphasised not only technical aptitude but also a genuine passion for automotive engineering. Keisha, a former nursery deputy who had worked with children for ten years took a big leap with her career change. She had a long-standing passion for cars. Keisha overcame gender stereotypes to excel in the program, earning recognition as a finalist for the Orange Hero Award.  She said, ‘This was an incredible opportunity and I love what I do now – it’s a dream come true’.

Similarly, Tyreese's journey from university graduate in sports and exercise science to motor vehicle enthusiast underscores the transformative opportunities provided by the RAC's apprenticeship scheme. Reflecting on his experience, Tyreese expresses eagerness to embark on his career as a qualified Roadside Technician.

"The RAC's apprenticeship scheme has been an invaluable experience," Tyreese shared. "I am thrilled to apply my newfound skills on the road and contribute to the RAC's legacy of excellence."
