Brittney Fingall
Brittney why did you want to become a motor vehicle apprentice?
‘I wanted to become a motor vehicle apprentice because you earn whilst you learn. I think that going to college once a week and learning the theory part of this industry is good because the other days you can focus more on how to fix and diagnose the car at your garage with the help of your mentor. I didn’t want to go to a normal college and only do theory and not enough practical like when I was in France, so doing this apprenticeship really helped me be more confident on working on cars.’
Brittney why did you choose North London Garages to provide you training as a vehicle technician?
‘When I finally decided to get back into the motor trade after taking a 2-year break. I didn’t really know where to go and apply for an apprenticeship scheme in London, so my career advisor from my previous college looked at some places and we had North London Garages website. The apprenticeship does not only provide you with the motor qualification it also provides and allows you to do your English, maths, ICT, Hybrid awareness and Refrigerant Handling qualifications within your apprenticeship.’
Brittney what have you learnt from your experience as an apprentice?
‘As an apprentice you learn not only how to fit parts on a vehicle, but you also learn how to diagnose a fault on a car. I enjoy diagnosing a vehicle that fits basic parts of a car. My workplace and college both provide me the steps I need to be able to fix a problem on a car. I also learned that going to a full time college course is totally different from an apprenticeship program and could be challenging to juggle both work and college at the same time.’
Jake what are the benefits of training and recruiting an apprentice within your team?
‘By far the biggest benefit is that you can essentially tailor your apprentice to their specific job role & your business requirements. They are fresh faced and always excited to develop their skill set without having picked up any bad habits from previous workplaces. I find they are also a breath of fresh air and generally increase the productivity of their mentor too by bringing in a new perspective into the business within their area of work.’
